SUMMARY:The Accrington Pals
DESCRIPTION:
At 7:20 am on 1st July 1916 some 720 men of the 11th Battalion East Lancashire Regiment, all recruited from Accrington and its neighbouring towns, went over the top on the first day of the Battle of The Somme. By 8am 584 of The Accrington Pals were dead. In this powerfully emotional play, Peter Whelan explores the lives of the people of Accrington and the impact such devastating losses had on the whole community. Women lost fathers, husbands and sons simultaneously. It is a story about love, life and loss told in a uniquely theatrical manner that is guaranteed to move any audience. Playing Up won universal praise for their previous World War one production of Journey’s End in 2008. Now they return to the topic with another powerful and wonderfully produced drama.

SUMMARY:Practice
DESCRIPTION:
Practice is one of a series of evenings offering a platform for testing new and innovative contemporary performance and dance in front of a live audience. Four specially selected performers and companies from across the UK present extracts of work-in-progress, offering the chance to see new work in the making. Practice is a partnership project with Salisbury Arts Centre.

Practice - 25th Feb, 7.30pm

ShadyJane

ShadyJane are thrilled to assist Annie Mitford (often referred to as ‘The Other Mitford’), on her mission to get back in touch with her famous sisters. Although she has little claim to the spotlight in comparison to her controversial siblings, family is family and she feels its time to let bygones be bygones. Join Annie for a good old catch up over a cuppa, in the hope that seven sisters can patch things up.

A Few Minutes with a Mitford is an attempt to get to the bottom of their own, and the nation’s fascination with the Mitford sisters.

Karla Shacklock

The hysteric highs, agonizing lows and safe plateaus of the years 1980 to 2011 have been pickled in glass jars.

Award-winning choreographer and performer Karla Shacklock allows them to fall, seep and explode into an ever changing landscape, in this emotionally charged, painfully honest, dance theatre solo.

As Karla physically, and mentally, ricochets through the years in a highly visual mesh of experiences, we can all take time to ponder our own journey and join with her in the catharsis.

‘wonderfully warm, extremely funny and incredibly moving’ (Jan Winters, Circomedia)

UDIFY

Udifydance Company presents “And When We Move…”

This up-and-coming all male dance company presents a new work by Artistic Director Christopher Reynolds and invites you to finish the sentence, whatever that may be...

Following their debut tour 4 Men:Move, Christopher Reynolds pays homage to the company's style of exciting floor work infused with the creation of a dynamic vocabulary.

Udifydance Company offer a fresh take on the effect social networking has on our choices and decisions. To make the work, they actively sought input through the company's Facebook page, asking followers to finish off the sentence,

SUMMARY:The Wizard of Oz
DESCRIPTION:After last year’s success with Guys and Dolls and the NODA award-winning Snoopy (Best Musical Production), Bath Operatic and Dramatic Society returns to the Theatre Royal with The Wizard of Oz which is perfect entertainment for all the family.

The company’s other recent shows have included their award-winning production of Oliver!, The Pirates of Penzance and The Gondoliers.

The Wizard of Oz is one of the best-loved stories of all time, thanks in great part to the award winning 1939 MGM musical fantasy film starring Judy Garland. The film has been named the most watched motion picture of all time and is continuously ranked in the top ten films in history. This version of the show is a hugely successful adaptation which John Kane originally wrote for the Royal Shakespeare Company, based on the novel and with music and lyrics from the MGM Motion Picture Score by Harold Arlen and E Y Harburg.

Dorothy Gale is a teenager who lives on a Kansas farm who daydreams of going "over the rainbow." Along with her house and her dog Toto, she is swept up by a tornado which drops her in the beautiful Land of Oz. Here she befriends a scarecrow, a tin man and a cowardly lion and together they set off down the Yellow Brick Road to find the mysterious Wizard of Oz, each hoping he will be able to grant them their heart’s desire. But en route they are forced to contend with the Wicked Witch of The West who will stop at nothing to prevent them from reaching the wizard and getting her hands on Dorothy’s magical ruby slippers.

The world famous score includes many show stopping songs such as Over The Rainbow, If I Only Had A Brain, We’re Off To See The Wizard and Ding Dong The Witch Is Dead.

SUMMARY:Instant Wit
DESCRIPTION:
The best in improvised comedy - there’ll be sketches, songs and general silliness – and all of it based around audience suggestions.

So now’s the time to indulge yourself if you’ve always had a secret yearning to see something really bizarre on stage. Mr Brunel and Mr Stephenson on their steam skateboards? Shy polar bears practicing beach volleyball? Well why not? But don’t worry, nobody is forced to participate and we even build in a section where anonymous suggestions, written down in the interval, can be acted out. Good suggestions receive flying packets of custard; the best of the evening gets a bottle of wine!

You might have seen something like this on the t.v. – but remember, this is totally live! Scarier for the actors, but much more satisfying for the audience: if you like your comedy fast-paced and with a slightly unusual edge, this is definitely for you.

Instant Wit – a bunch of very Unusual Suspects who are forever on the run from the Comedy Police!
