Enjoyed by children and adults alike since 1930, Arthur Ransome’s timeless story has been adapted for the stage by Helen Edmundson (Coram Boy) with music by Neil Hannon (The Devine Comedy).

Novato Theatre Company make their debut performance at The Mission Theatre with their devised piece Awaken. This new and dynamic company is bursting with energy and style, ready to showcase their original ideas in a creative explosion of mythological madness.

Awaken begins by exploring Plato’s concept of the soulmate, drawing upon ancient mythology. Cupid and Psyche are cruelly torn apart by the almighty Jupiter, King of the Gods, who feels threatened by the growing strength of mankind. Psyche must undergo a series of gruelling tasks, set out by Cupid’s mother Venus, in order to prove her love. As the piece unfolds Psyche and Cupid’s relationship is challenged by the complications between the mortal world and the Gods. Cupid and Psyche’s son, half mortal, half God, delves into a world of story books brought to life by his imagination in order to escape the chaos of his feuding parents.

Novato Theatre Company was founded in 2012 after the success of their sister company, Novato Dance. Their performances are entirely devised and explore a range of theatre styles including physical and post-modernism with a bit of comedy thrown in for good measure.

This is a fabulous concert featuring the internationally-acclaimed and award-winning Wessex Male Choir with a highly entertaining and varied programme. Be prepared to change your ideas about male choirs! The Choir is one of the UK's best male choirs having won the 2011 International Eisteddfod male choir competition, beating an impressive selection of international competitors as well as their more famous rivals, the Fron Choir from Wales! The Choir will be joined by four very accomplished Opera Soloists for the concert. The Opera Soloists will be singing a lovely selection of favourite and well-known opera arias and duets, including the gorgeous Pearl Fishers duet and the Flower Duet from Lakme. Soloists are: Debra Skeen (soprano), Louise Viner (mezzo soprano), Guy Edwards (tenor), and Brendan Casey (baritone). The Opera Soloists will conclude their programme with the famous quartet from Verdi's Rigoletto which featured in the film 'Quartet'. The accompanist is Jon Driver.
