Made in Somerset 2009 : Performance, Exploration & Debate
Made in Somerset 2009 will take place from Wednesday 9th to Friday 11th
September at The Merlin Theatre, Frome. Made kicks off on Wednesday evening
with a new event - a Platform for emerging practitioners/new experimental
work. Thursday brings the usual showcasing of work produced or made in
Somerset, and Friday - a symposium which we invite you to be part of.
* Fri 11 September: A Theatre & Performance Symposium *
'making and presenting work outside of the urban critical mass’
This is an essential opportunity for lively discussion, exploration and
exchange. We are living in a changing climate - ecologically, economically
and culturally and this symposium is an energising opportunity to meet
together, to hear inspiring and challenging speakers, to listen to
frustrations and imaginings - to broaden our vision, get inspired, meet up,
plug in!
This symposium is being co-ordinated by Sue Palmer (Artist & Associate
Lecturer at Dartington College of Arts) and Dominic Somers
(Practice/Theatreworks) on behalf of Theatre Somerset. It will feature (full biogs at www.takeart.org) the internationally recognised Emma Stenning (Bristol Old Vic Executive Director) and Sjoerd Wagenaar (PeerGroup, Netherlands) who will speak in relation to the thematic of the symposium and present their work and thinking in relation to theatre making - with time for questions, as well as provocations/challenges/imaginings from Somerset practitioners and promoters including subjects such as 'Somerset: a graveyard of ambition', or 'why don't young practitioners stay in the county', or 'why do the agencies get all the money- what about the artists?'. This symposium will inform this process for creating a theatre strategy for Somerset and future opportunities, so please come and contribute - your voice is valuable.
This is a wonderful opportunity for you to meet other people who are
enthusiastic about engaging with the current climate of making and producing
theatre, so we look forward to seeing you there!
