Over two days, we’ll explore ways to use autobiographical material to make art. The workshop will focus on unpicking romantic relationships, but the ideas can be transferred to making work of all kinds. We’ll think about generating material, experimenting with form, how to involve an audience and how far to edit. We’ll spend lots of time in the studio, but there will also be exercises which take us out into the city to have real encounters. The first day will concentrate on generating material, and a variety of ways to uncover and make work from our own histories. The second day will be focused on shaping the material we have made and exploring further our relationship to relationships.

Participants will need to be open to sharing personal material, and might have backgrounds in performance, theatre, live art, dance, writing or in the visual arts – there’s certainly no need to be a performer.

Resident Company at Salisbury Arts Centre, Two Destination Language is a contemporary performance company led by Alister Lownie and Katherina Radeva. A belief that live work should have its audience at its core, and that artists should strive to create stimulating experiences for their audiences, is the foundation of their work. Community, identity and memory are the ideas which percolate all Two Destination Language work: an interest in boundaries and otherness, belonging and personal history. For the artists, community is a corollary of performative work, and it is a pleasure to share in its exploration.

To apply, write a personals ad about yourself (it doesn’t need to be serious, but it should be true and no more than 40 words) and up to 200 words about why you’d like to take part, including how it might be relevant to your work. Send these, with your name and contact details, towltm@twodestinationlanguage.com by 27 February.
